A living heritage

Traditional Indian fragrance

Fragrance in India is part of a rich and varied cultural landscape. Flowers, woods, herbs, resins, oils and incense appear in different regional, household and devotional settings. The materials, methods and meanings are not the same everywhere; each tradition reflects its own place, people and practice.

This page offers an introduction rather than a single definition. It celebrates the knowledge of makers and communities while recognizing that fragrance traditions continue to change and grow.

Sacred texts & practice

Vedic inspiration

The Vedic tradition is one part of India's broad and diverse heritage. AradhyaKripa takes inspiration from the care, ceremony and sensory richness associated with ritual life. Our products are contemporary fragrance goods; they do not claim to reproduce a single ancient formula or represent every Vedic practice.

The language of scent

Gandha & fragrance traditions

Gandha is a Sanskrit word associated with scent or fragrance. A Sanskrit-English glossary published by India's Commission for Scientific and Technical Terminology translates the term as “smell.” Across Indian traditions, scent may come from flowers, aromatic materials, prepared pastes, oils or incense. Its role can be devotional, ceremonial, personal or simply part of daily life—and its meaning depends on the people and context.
